Netflix teams up with EbonyLife Media to strengthen its position in Nigeria

2020 is shaping up to be a prolific year for global streaming giant Netflix.

After officially launching its operations in Nigeria and West Africa through a partnership with production company Upper Room, Netflix is now joining forces with Mo Abudu, CEO of EbonyLife Media, one of Nigeria's leading media groups.

The two entities have announced the signing of a partnership to create two original Nigerian series and several licensed series from the production company EbonyLife. Both series will be adaptations of two literary works:

  • The novel by author Lola Shoneyin, "Baba Segi, His Wives, Their Secrets"
  • The play "Death and the King's Horseman," written in 1986 by Nobel Prize-winning author Wole Soyinka.

"This unprecedented partnership illustrates Netflix's interest in what Africa has to say. For our part, we are grateful and excited about the prospect of collaborating with the Netflix teams led by Dorothy and Ben, and look forward to producing a collection of unique and fascinating Nigerian stories for Netflix audiences around the world over the next few years,"
explains Mo Abudu, CEO of EbonyLife Media.

In recent years, Africa has been the new challenge for the giant Netflix, which is accelerating its development on the continent, notably through the production of original African series. Thanks to this new partnership, Netflix is strengthening its position in Nigeria, the world's second largest film industry with its Nollywood productions.
