Following the eighth edition of DISCOP, held from November 20 to 22, 2019, in Johannesburg, it is now time to take stock.
For three days, distributors and buyers, producers and media representatives gathered to exchange ideas and create new synergies. The focus was on African television production projects, the currently booming animation industry, and finally, the export of content produced on the continent.
However, this latest edition does not seem to have been a resounding success, and the organizing team has noted a decline in attendance.
In fact, 976 delegates from 68 countries attended DISCOP, compared to 1,155 in 2018, including 194 content buyers, 216 African content producers, and 281 international content distributors.
In response, the organizers have decided to change the date of DISCOP Johannesburg 2020. The next edition will therefore take place from July 29 to 31 in the South African metropolis.
"In July, content buyers still have money to spend for the current year. At the end of November, budgets are much tighter and negotiations always slow down before the holiday season," said Patrick Zuchowicki, president of DISCOP.
This change of date will bring the two editions, Johannesburg and Abidjan, closer together, as they will now take place two months apart. This will be an opportunity for the organizers to promote stronger relationships and synergies between players in the French-speaking and English-speaking zones.
