Netflix invests in co-production in South Africa

Netflix is pursuing its ambition to invest in local content production to attract new subscribers on the African continent.

The VOD giant recently announced plans to accelerate its strategy of creating original content with a $62 million investment in co-production.

To begin with, South Africa will benefit from this investment with productions created with local partners such as Film Afrika, Gambit Films, and QUIZZICAL Pictures, helping to boost the local film and audiovisual industry.

Netflix added that it has already invested nearly $140 million in the co-production of South African content over the past five years.

But Netflix is not alone in the market, facing stiff competition from players such as Disney+.
