Facebook: Julie Owono appointed member of the Supervisory Board for Sub-Saharan Africa

In Africa, Facebook has been seeking to take responsibility for content for several years now, given the hundreds of millions of users on the continent. The web giant has set itself the goal of encouraging freedom of expression while strengthening the security of its user community.

As part of this initiative, Facebook announced the upcoming creation of a content oversight board, an independent global body that will facilitate joint reflection on regulatory decisions.

A few days ago, Facebook's management unveiled the first members of the future oversight board. Representing sub-Saharan Africa, Cameroonian lawyer Julie Owono was appointed as one of the first members. She is the executive director of Internet Sans Frontières, a French NGO that promotes and defends human rights on the internet, particularly the right to freedom of expression and the right to privacy.

The Oversight Board will eventually be composed of 40 representatives.
