Facebook has been supporting its presence on the continent for several years, contributing to the development of the digital ecosystem in a region where social media is increasingly popular among internet users, particularly children.
As part of this initiative, the web giant has decided to launch Messenger Kids, its instant messaging service, in 70 countries, including some in sub-Saharan Africa. The service has been designed for children, who will be able to connect with their friends and family via messaging and video chat without being exposed to advertising. The service has also been designed for parents who want to control their children's use of social media, ensuring online safety as Facebook Messenger Kids accounts will be directly linked to their parents' accounts on the social network.
In addition, Facebook ensures that Messenger Kids is fully compliant with the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
