Orange launches Djoliba, its fiber optic network in West Africa

At the AfricaTech Festival international event, the Orange Group announced the commercial launch of Djoliba, a pan-African terrestrial fiber optic network.

The new backbone, comprising 10,000 km of terrestrial network and 10,000 km of submarine cable, covers eight African countries: Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, and Senegal.

According to the official press release: "Until now, telecommunications networks in West Africa were built within each country, up to its borders: there were no cross-border networks. To provide service between two capitals, operators had to integrate the offerings of several providers and connect several different networks that interconnect at border points. A true innovation, this new network simplifies the interconnection processes between countries…"

Through this new project, the French operator is renewing its commitment to the digital transformation of the continent and the development of internet access by connecting operators, businesses, and local institutions with the potential to serve 330 million inhabitants.
