In 2019, on average across the eight countries surveyed by Kantar in its Africascope study,
- 92% of individuals aged 15 and over watched television on a daily basis,
- 62% of individuals aged 15 and over listened to the radio daily.
- 28% of those aged 15 and over accessed the internet every day or almost every day.
While television viewership remains above 90% in all countries studied, viewing time varies greatly from one country to another. While most countries have a daily viewing time per individual of more than 4 hours, Burkina Faso has an average viewing time of 3 hours and 4 minutes and Mali only 2 hours and 31 minutes.
Radio listening time varies by a factor of two between countries. It is high in countries where TV viewing time is low (3 hours and 8 minutes for Burkina Faso and 2 hours and 21 minutes for Mali) and averages around 1 hour and 30 minutes per day in most other countries.
The growth in internet usage remains fairly low (+2 points in one year) except in Senegal, where growth is stronger (+5%) and the number of daily internet users is highest (48% compared to 28% on average).
On average, the daily connection time per individual is 42 minutes per day.
WhatsApp (82% of internet users have a WhatsApp account) has almost caught up with Facebook (86% of internet users have an account), while Instagram ranks third with 28%.
The Africascope 2019 study was conducted from September 2018 to June 2019 in eight sub-Saharan African countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Mali, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, and Senegal, representing a total of 19.1 million individuals aged 15 and over.
