Every year, Médiamétrie conducts a study on TV and radio audiences and Internet usage in Dakar.
In a press release issued on January 29, 2026, Médiamétrie announced that the results of the survey conducted with its partner Omedia are available to subscribers and, as usual, provided some overall results.
This year, the survey was conducted in three waves: from September 21 to October 6, from October 26 to November 9, and from November 23 to December 8, 2025, with a sample of 1,470 people aged 15 and over, living in the four municipalities that make up Greater Dakar.
Television
As usual, Médiamétrie only publishes a single audience indicator: the cumulative audience, and gives no indication of the ranking of channels.
This indicator, already at its highest in 2024 (85.9%), will increase in the second half of 2025 to reach 90% among those aged 15 and over.
At this level of audience across the entire population, disparities based on gender or age can only be extremely small.
Unsurprisingly, therefore, women are as numerous as men, 15-35 year olds are as numerous as those aged 50 and over, and higher socio-professional categories are at the same level as lower socio-professional categories.
All of these categories reach around 90% of the cumulative audience.
Radio
Over the period, almost 1 in 2 inhabitants of Greater Dakar (46.1%) listened to the radio for an average of 1 hour and 5 minutes per day (Monday-Friday). In 2024, this figure was 38.4% for a slightly longer listening time of 1 hour and 14 minutes.
ZIK FM, RFM, and WALF FM are the most listened to stations in DAKAR, accounting for almost two-thirds of the radio audience (63.8%), ahead of SUD FM and LAMP FALL FM.
Internet
Here too, Médiamétrie has chosen to publish indicators that all reach levels above 90% of the population.
More than 9 out of 10 residents of Greater Dakar (97.4%) own a smartphone.
93.9% of respondents accessed the Internet every day or almost every day from a smartphone.
93.5% of individuals are registered on at least one social network, with TikTok ahead of Facebook with 90.9% of users, followed by Instagram and X.
While just under half of the population listens to the radio, everyone watches television regardless of age, gender, or socio-professional category, and almost everyone in Dakar owns a smartphone and is registered on a social network, regardless of age, gender, or socio-professional category.
This does not shed much light on the reality of the Senegalese media landscape.
Which channels are the most watched? Are they Senegalese or pan-African channels? Has RTS made progress under its new management? How many people use the internet every day? Apart from social media, what are the main other uses of the internet? …
We continue to believe that Médiamétrie, as well as other research institutes, would be well advised to promote their studies more effectively by highlighting relevant indicators that can provide operational insights to all those who, while not subscribers, nevertheless have an interest in the media.
This would help to develop a culture of study in Senegal and throughout French-speaking Africa.
