Digital TV Research predicts that the number of SVOD subscribers in Africa will quadruple by 2025.
The market, estimated at 2.75 million subscribers in 2019, will thus grow to 12.96 million subscribers in 2025.
It is in English-speaking Africa, led by Nigeria and South Africa, that this growth will be most significant, with these two countries accounting for 55% of the total in 2025.
In French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa, digital infrastructure unfortunately does not currently allow for the real development of SVOD, leaving traditional television to dominate for a few more years in terms of both consumption and advertising revenue.
Furthermore, according to the study report, the market will be boosted by the arrival in 2022 of DISNEY+, which DIGITAL TV RESEARCH predicts will reach 2.7 million subscribers by 2025, and the development of Netflix, which is investing more and more in original African fiction and whose estimated number of subscribers for 2025approaching 5.7 million.
Together, these two players are expected to account for two-thirds of the market in 2025.
