RTS broadcasts the World Cup in Senegal

It's now official: RTS will broadcast all 28 matches in the free-to-air package for the upcoming World Cup.

In Senegal, there has been confusion in recent weeks between E-media, which announced on June 24, 2022, that it had acquired the free-to-air rights " rights to the World Cup from New World TV, and RTS, which announced on August 18 that it had acquired the same rights with the support of the Senegalese government, prompting an immediate reaction from E-media, which considered itself to still be the holder of these rights.

New World TV has therefore just confirmed that it has terminated its contract with E-media because the latter had not paid the cost of the rights as required by the contract signed between the two parties. A notice of default was therefore sent on July 23 by New World TV to E-Media.

According to Louis Biyao, lawyer for New World TV, " It is clearly stipulated in the contract that failure to comply with the commitments will result in the termination of the contract," explains Louis Biyao. Despite this, New World TV claims to have sent a termination letter to E-Media.

According to our information, E-media has concluded an agreement on the basis of 730 million CFA francs, while RTS would pay around 1 billion CFA francs for the same package.

It should be noted that the Senegalese TV advertising market, as measured by Omedia, represents a total annual gross revenue of 13.5 billion CFA francs. The cost of the rights acquired by RTS for one month of competition thus represents, in net revenue, slightly less than one month of the total Senegalese TV market.
