In the context of the upcoming elections in Burkina Faso and Niger, Jocelyn Grange, Africa Director at CFI, the French media development agency, offers his insights on the civic issues surrounding the electoral process, particularly among young people.
As you know, Burkina Faso and Niger are preparing to hold presidential and legislative elections: the vote will take place on November 22 in Burkina Faso, while in Niger it will take place over four months (from December to March 2021), when regional elections will also be held. With this in mind, CFI is broadcasting a series of ten videos produced by French-Burkinabe cartoonist Damien Glez to raise awareness among young people in these two countries about the civic issues involved in electoral processes.
This initiative is part of the activities of the "MédiaSahel" project, which aims to contribute, through the media, to the inclusion of young people and to the stabilization and democratic development of the Sahel countries.
The videos were originally produced in French and then translated into ten local languages so that everyone, regardless of their origin or mother tongue, could understand them: Mooré, Fulfulde, Gourmantché, Diouala, and Bissa in Burkina Faso; and Tamasheq, Fulfulde, Hausa, Zarma, and Kanuri in Niger.
They are broadcast several times a day on various television channels (Burkina Info, Savane TV, and BF1 in Burkina Faso, and Labari, Niger 24, and Canal 3 in Niger). In addition, a network of Burkinabe influencers such as Aïcha Bellem, Freddy Lino Guibre, Amélie Gue, and Jean Didié Naré are also participating in this awareness campaign, using their fame to optimize the dissemination of information.
