Vivendi has presented its financial results for the third quarter of 2022, providing details on the activities of the CANAL+ Group in France and internationally. This is also an opportunity to focus on the initiatives taken in recent months by the CANAL+ Group internationally, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
Slight increase in revenue
For the first nine months of 2022, Canal+ Group's revenue amounted to €4,292 million, a slight increase (+1.0%) compared to the same period in 2021 (-0.2% at constant exchange rates and scope).
Revenue in mainland France amounted to €2,319 million, up 1.3% at constant exchange rates and scope compared to the first nine months of 2021.
International revenue rose 6.3%, from €1,633 million for the first nine months of 2021 to €1,736 million for the same period in 2022 (+3.6% at constant exchange rates and scope), driven by an increase in the subscriber base.
A series of initiatives concerning Sub-Saharan Africa
Canal+ Group strengthened its content offering and continued its international development, notably with:
- The signing of an exclusive partnership with Rai Com, enabling Canal+ to become the sole broadcaster of the Venice Film Festival in France and several countries in Europe and Africa, and thus offer its subscribers exceptional coverage of the event in 2022 and 2023.
- The acquisition of a stake in the South African company MultiChoice Group, exceeding the 25% threshold. Canal+ Group now holds 26.26% of the capital and has consolidated its position as the largest shareholder in Multichoice Group.
- The acquisition of Zacu Entertainment, a major player in content production and distribution in Rwanda, thereby strengthening its commitment to African production.
- Securing sports rights with the acquisition of the Premier Padel circuit until 2026 in more than 60 countries, the renewal for the next three seasons of Premier League rights in sub-Saharan Africa and, finally, renewing the broadcasting rights, now exclusively in French, for LaLiga for Canal+ subscribers in sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, and Mauritius for several seasons.
