As announced a few weeks ago, the UAR has obtained exclusive broadcasting rights for the upcoming 2019-2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) matches in sub-Saharan Africa. Following this announcement, the marketing of TV rights to various channels was set to begin.
Following a call for tenders launched by the African Broadcasting Union, RTS was designated as the exclusive holder of the broadcasting rights for the upcoming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal, as well as other CAF events for the period 2019-2023. This announcement was made by Grégoire Ndjaka, Director General of the African Broadcasting Union, in the presence of the President of Senegal's National Audiovisual Regulation Council.
Nevertheless, the situation regarding the broadcast of the CAN in Senegal remains unclear. In January 2019, TFM, the leading channel in Senegal in terms of audience share, which is not part of the UAR, signed a contract with the FDFA, in the presence of CAF representatives, for the broadcast of the 2019 CAN matches in Senegal. This agreement is non-exclusive, as at the time of signing the contract, the media group said it was open to sharing rights with RTS.
For the moment, the TFM group has not yet responded to the announcement made by the UAR and TSM. To be continued…
