Africascope 2019: one in two Africans has already heard of DTT

Africascope 2019, the study conducted by KANTAR between September 2018 and June 2019 in eight French-speaking sub-Saharan African countries, this year includes questions on DTT in Africa (awareness, use, intention to purchase equipment, obstacles, etc.).

There are, of course, significant disparities between countries, as some have already made the switch to digital while others have not.

While 86% of Senegalese have already heard of it, only 34% in Côte d'Ivoire, where the switch to digital is technically complete and the launch of new channels is expected by the end of the year, are aware of it.

In Senegal, Burkina Faso, and the DRC, where DTT has already been rolled out, 46% of those equipped use it to receive free channels and 54% to receive both free and pay channels.

Nearly half of those without equipment are considering switching to DTT, particularly to access new channels (58% of those intending to do so), to enjoy better sound and image quality (26%), or to limit interruptions in the event of rain, for example (12%).

The price of the decoder and a lack of information on how to get equipped remain the main obstacles.
