With just a few weeks to go before the next MIDEM opens in Cannes from June 4 to 7, the event organizers have announced a second edition of the African Forum.
This African tour began on April 9 with visits to three major African music cities, Dakar, Douala, and Lagos, and will conclude with a day dedicated to African music on June 5 during MIDEM.
There is a general consensus that Africa is brimming with musical talent, even though the continent accounts for only 0.73% of the global music business. Countries are still struggling to make their mark on the international scene. But the development of digital and other technologies could change the game. Artists and labels in the music industry can now more easily export their work around the world and reach more and more consumers, even if value creation and copyright remain marginal.
To support this momentum and help structure the music market, MIDEM intends to contribute, as a member of the international music community, to building bridges between the African continent and the rest of the world.
A series of case studies and round tables will be organized to highlight the current situation of music markets on the continent and their internationalization. Artists and professionals will come together to discuss the major challenges facing the African music industry and brainstorm solutions to address them, while promoting the creativity of local artists.
