Médiamétrie has just published the latest results of its study on television, radio, and internet usage in Senegal.
TELEVISION
Conducted between October 11 and December 7, 2020, this study shows significant changes in television consumption compared to last year.
Senegalese people are both more numerous and more loyal television viewers: 84.6% in 2020 compared to 81.3% in 2019, with residents of Greater Dakar watching television every day (Monday-Sunday). These viewers spent an average of 5 hours and 33 minutes watching television every day, compared to 3 hours and 55 minutes last year. That's more than an hour and a half of additional viewing time.
In this context of excessive television consumption, Senegalese television channels achieved a 43.2% audience share, a sharp decline from last year, when they accounted for 51.3% of the total television audience.
Nevertheless, Senegalese channels still attract the largest number of viewers on a daily basis: TFM leads ahead of SEN TV and 2STV.
RADIO
Over the same period, nearly two-thirds of Greater Dakar residents (65.2%) listened to the radio for an average of 3 hours and 49 minutes per day (Monday-Friday): This is roughly the same level as in 2019 (66.1 in cumulative audience and 3 hours and 46 minutes in listening time).
ZIK FM and RFM remain the most listened to stations in Senegal, but their market share, which was 72.6% in 2019, fell to 59.4% in 2020.
RFI, LAMP FALL FM, and SUD FM complete the TOP 5.
INTERNET
Internet indicators remain extremely stable: as in 2019, nearly 8 out of 10 people (79.4%) own a smartphone (80.9% in 2019).
70.3% of respondents used the internet every day or almost every day in 2020 (compared to 70.8% in 2019).
Social media usage remains high: 64.3% of individuals are registered on at least one social network (compared to 66.1% in 2019).
Facebook is still in the lead, followed by Instagram and Twitter.
The study was conducted by Médiamétrie and its field partner Omedia in the four municipalities that make up Greater Dakar. The surveys were conducted face-to-face in three waves of 16 days each, between October 11 and December 7, 2020, among 1,447 people aged 15 and over who are representative of the population living in Dakar.
