The Africascope 2020 study covers eight countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Mali, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, and Senegal, and provides a detailed snapshot of media consumption among 19.6 million individuals aged 15 and over.
Due to the health crisis, the fieldwork for this 2020 study was only carried out during the second half of 2020.
MAIN RESULTS TV
In the second half of 2020, an average of 91% of Africans over the age of 15 in the study population watched television on a daily basis, for an average of 3 hours and 52 minutes per day, with significant disparities between countries, as shown in the graph below:

TOP 3 CHANNELS NOVELAS TV
is the only channel to feature in the top 3 in each of the eight countries surveyed. It ranks first in Gabon and Congo.
TV5 MONDE
appears three times in the top 3 (DRC, Congo, Cameroon).
Two public channels rank first in their countries (RTI and ORTM
).
Overall, across the eight countries, international and pan-African channels achieve a 64% TV audience share, compared to 36% for national channels (public or private).
Furthermore, television is mainly watched at home, but also outside the home. The constraints linked to the health crisis have partly affected viewing outside the home: 25% vs. 35% in 2019 say they watch television somewhere other than at home at least once a week.
In the second half of 2020, Africascope expanded its field of observation beyond the capitals of each country.
Outside the capitals, television is watched by 86% of people aged 15 and over, who spend an average of 3 hours and 37 minutes per day watching it (slightly less than in the capitals).
64% of households with a TV say they subscribe to a pay-TV service (vs. 73% in capital cities).
MAIN RADIO RESULTS
In the second half of 2020, 62% of individuals aged 15 and over listened to the radio every day for an average of 2 hours and 10 minutes per listener. Burkina Faso is the country with the highest radio audience, with 92% of the population listening to the radio every day for an average of 3 hours. In contrast, in Cameroon, only 46% of the population listens to the radio every day.

TOP 3 RADIO stations
Radio listening mainly concerns national public or private stations, which account for 82% of the audience share.
Nevertheless, during this pandemic,
the international channel RFI
is in the top 3 in 7 out of 8 countries.
Outside the capital, radio consumption is more widespread: 83% of the population aged 15 and over (compared to 62% in the capitals) listen to the radio every day for an average of 2 hours and 11 minutes.
In addition, the audience share of international stations is also higher: 27% (vs. 18% in capital cities).
