Yaoundé has been hosting the UAR Summit on Artificial Intelligence since March 4.
African media outlets were invited to begin reflecting on the major technological advances that are gradually disrupting the industry and the way information is handled as a whole.
Between challenge and opportunity, the UAR Summit on Artificial Intelligence and the Media has also chosen this summit to give a voice to leading AI experts in order to understand and highlight its application in the media. The debates will focus on "issues of ethics, the automation of editorial processes, and the impact of AI on the diversity and integrity of information."
The Summit will thus enable the creation of strategic partnerships between stakeholders and provide insight into the future of African media, which will develop thanks to AI. Although it is currently difficult to assess the extent to which AI has been adopted in newsrooms across the continent, these technological advances are rapidly transforming large sections of our societies as well as many sectors, such as the media.
The democratization of artificial intelligence is underway, but the recent use of tools such as Chat GPT has prompted public authorities to react and address crucial issues such as the ethics of using AI in the media. This is also a key point addressed at this new UAR Summit, whose ambition remains to reflect on how AI can be integrated into the African media landscape to pave the way for new opportunities without compromising media fairness and the integrity of information disseminated on the continent.
