TV5Monde is considering opening up its capital to seven African countries

As part of its 2025-2028 strategic plan, TV5Monde has proposed expanding its shareholding to seven French-speaking African countries (Benin, Gabon, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Congo-Brazzaville).

To this end, Yves Bigot has initiated a series of discussions with the leaders of these countries in recent weeks. "This channel cannot remain one for the French-speaking world of the North that addresses the world, particularly the countries of the South. In the coming years—as soon as possible, I hope—we must open up our governance and funding to African states. This is essential, both politically and strategically," explained Yves Bigot, president of TV5 Monde, quoted by Les Échos in January.

This ambitious project, dubbed "Convergences francophones" (Francophone Convergences), aims to strengthen TV5Monde's presence in Africa and promote the diversity of Francophone voices on the channel. The new shareholders, who are expected to be officially confirmed at TV5Monde's next board meeting on April 30, will each contribute approximately €600,000 to the channel's funding.

In return for their financial contribution, the new shareholders will enjoy privileged access to TV5 Monde's programs, magazines, and dramas, and the national news programs of the new shareholder countries will be broadcast on TV5 Monde and its digital platform.
