The Basketball Africa League is gaining momentum across the continent. Funded by the NBA, the major basketball competition returns for a fourth season packed with new features.
It should be noted that in 2020, the NBA announced the launch of the Basketball Africa League, a few months after the creation of the first NBA Academy Africa in Dakar, which aims to identify talent and structure African basketball. This is a crucial step for the development of the sport internationally, as the Basketball Africa League is the first professional basketball league created outside the United States.
In 2024, this major competition dedicated to basketball, a very popular sport in Africa, will be held for the fourth time. The program includes 48 games played across four African countries. South Africa, Egypt, Rwanda, and Senegal will host the competition from March 2024 until May.
For the time being, no information has been released regarding the broadcast of the entire competition on television.
Beyond performance and entertainment, sport has become a real driver of economic and social development for young people, a vehicle for inclusion, cultural influence, and diplomacy. For a continent with a young population, sport can be a real lever for change, provided it is structured and professionalized. Even though there is a brain drain of local talent, sporting events are flourishing and stakeholders are multiplying initiatives, thereby contributing to the construction of an ecosystem and the gradual emergence of a market capable of reaching international audiences.
