Television, radio, and internet usage audience in Cameroon in the second half of 2020

TELEVISION: more daily viewers but slightly less regular

Between September 27 and December 7, 2020, 90.3%

of residents in the cities of Douala, Yaoundé, Bamenda, and Bafoussam watched television every day. During the same period last year, the figure was 84.8%.

Their viewing time averaged 4 hours and 2 minutes,

compared to 4 hours and 26 minutes

a year earlier.

In the second half of 2020, EQUINOXE TV remained the channel with the highest number of daily viewers, ahead of CRTV TV and CANAL 2 International.

RADIO: Strong audience growth compared to the second half of 2019 

Over the same period, 50.7%

of the inhabitants of Douala, Yaoundé, Bamenda, and Bafoussam listened to the radio, compared to only 37%

the previous year. In addition, listening time reached 3 hours

per day per person, compared to 2 hours and 40 minutes

in September-October 2019.

The top three radio stations, which alone account for 57% of the total audience, are EQUINOXE FM, RFI, and BALAFON FM. CRTV Radio Nationale, which was the most listened to station in 2019, has disappeared from the top three.

INTERNET: Strong growth in internet usage

Residents of Douala, Yaoundé, Bamenda, and Bafoussam were also asked about their personal smartphone ownership. 77.4%

of individuals aged 15 and over own a smartphone, compared to 66.7%

a year ago and just over 60%

two years ago.

This sharp increase also applies to internet use, with 68.3%

of respondents surfing the internet every day, compared to 54.7%

in the same period in 2019.

Social media use has also seen a sharp increase,

with 81.6%

of individuals reporting that they are registered on at least one social network, compared to 76.7%

in 2019. Facebook remains in the lead, followed by Instagram and then Twitter.
METHODOLOGY:

The study on awareness, viewing and listening habits, and audience figures for television channels and radio stations, as well as social media usage, was conducted by Médiamétrie and its subsidiary Omedia in Cameroon's four main cities (Douala, Yaoundé, Bamenda, and Bafoussam) in the second half of 2020. The surveys were conducted face-to-face in three waves of 16 days each, between September 27, 2020, and December 7, 2020, among 1,677 people aged 15 and over who were representative of the population living in these four cities.
