On February 4, Walf TV had its broadcasting license "permanently" revoked at the request of the Senegalese Minister of Communication, on the grounds of "inciting violence" after organizing a debate on the Senegalese government's decision to postpone the presidential elections scheduled for February 25.
Following numerous protests from the local press, and in particular from the Coordination des Associations de Presse du Sénégal (CAP), which "strongly condemned this excessive measure, which is unacceptable in a democratic country such as Senegal," President Macky Sall decided to restore the channel on February 11 to the country's distributors' packages.
"We met with President Macky Sall and he decided to restore the signal. We thank the Senegalese people, who fought hard, and the president for his gesture, which has liberated an entire nation," Cheikh Niass, CEO of Walf TV, told AFP.
Walf TV had already been shut down by the Minister of Communication for a month in June 2023 because of its coverage of protests against the conviction of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.
