Starting May 25, TV5MONDE will launch its new pan-African series, Renaissance. This original program, produced in Senegal, will be broadcast on TV5MONDE's Afrique channel, as well as on its app and digital platform, afrique.tv5monde.com.
Renaissance, directed by Abdoulahad Wone and Hbuert Laba Ndao, tackles the critical issue of drugs in West Africa. In recent years, this region of Africa has become a major center of production and consumption, as well as a transit zone for drug trafficking to Europe, Asia, and North America. In a region where users are perceived as criminals, criminalization remains the norm. Marginalized and stigmatized, drug users end up becoming socially isolated and are among the most vulnerable communities on the continent. This series offers a new perspective on these clients and proposes an approach that focuses on medical treatment and social reintegration for users.
This series is produced by the Senegalese company RAES Prod, a subsidiary of the NGO RAES, which specializes in producing educational content for traditional and digital media to raise awareness of social issues on the African continent. It was developed with the support of the OSIWA Foundation, whose mission is to support the creation of companies in West Africa.
Synopsis
Following the death of his sister and actress Anta from an overdose, Moussa, a former restaurant owner in Abidjan, creates the Renaissance Center, a drug addiction treatment center in Dakar. Although Judge Seynabou Niang finally gives him the green light to admit prisoners on a trial basis, Moussa's parents are not supportive. This venture brings back painful memories of the loss of Anta. However, Moussa believes in this project and is determined to prove that the five residents in his care can be "rehabilitated" and reintegrated into society and their families. But if he fails, the entire Center will be condemned by the judge. The work that the group will have to do to reduce their addictions and escape the stigma they suffer will be arduous and fraught with many pitfalls. What impact will the justice system, the police, the streets, their families, and temptations have on Amy, Madeleine, Djibril, Bouba, and Weuz?
One episode will be broadcast every evening, Sunday through Thursday at 6 p.m. GMT, and rebroadcast every day from Monday to Friday at 7:45 a.m. on the TV5MONDE Afrique channel. Each episode will be available the day after it airs on the website afrique.tv5monde.com and on the free "TV5MONDE Afrique" app.
