Press release: RFI Clubs mobilize against the spread of COVID-19 in Africa

As actors on the ground involved in their communities, RFI Clubs are mobilized to relay essential information to the populations in their cities or countries about the behaviors to adopt to protect themselves against the coronavirus pandemic. They also help to disseminate preventive measures based on information produced by RFI's editorial teams and receive support from France Médias Monde to help them with these local initiatives in all areas.

Through videos, written communications for social media, and grassroots initiatives targeting the most isolated populations, RFI clubs are putting their energy to work for others to stop the spread of the virus:

  • In the Democratic Republic of Congo, RFI clubs in Goma, Beni, and Butembo are actively working together on prevention in North Kivu province. Priority has been given to actions targeting women, community leaders, and association representatives to ensure the dissemination of a clear message: "Naitika, Najikinga, Nakinga," which means "I accept, I protect myself, and I protect others."
  • In Togo, the RFI Savanes Club in Dapaong in the north of the country has launched a "handwashing campaign."
  • In Uganda, the RFI club in the Nakivale refugee camp carried out a prevention campaign using posters.
  • In Africa, there are 70 RFI clubs in 24 countries. RFI's listener service is in constant contact with their leaders via a dedicated WhatsApp group and regularly provides them with radio content related to prevention and the fight against fake news about Covid-19. The department also regularly sends them a lockdown newsletter listing the actions and content produced by the clubs in their respective countries. This newsletter also provides access to all the prevention audio spots (in French and African languages) produced by RFI, as well as spots in French produced by the clubs themselves, which are made available to everyone.
