MultiChoice, owner of pay-TV services DStv and GOtv in Nigeria, has announced a further price increase of around 20% on all its subscription packages, effective from March 1, 2025. This is the second increase in less than a year.
The Federal Commission for Competition and Consumer Protection (FCCPC) has ordered MultiChoice to suspend this price increase pending further investigation.
Despite this directive, MultiChoice proceeded with its price increase on March 1, 2025.
justifying this increase by the rise in operating costs, particularly due to the depreciation of the naira and inflation.
This decision sparked strong reactions from consumers and Nigerian regulatory authorities, and the FCCPC took legal action against MultiChoice Nigeria and its CEO, John Ugbe, for deliberately obstructing the Commission's investigation and implementing an unauthorized price increase.
It should be noted that just one year ago, the Nigerien authorities supported the launch of SLTV in order to limit the increase in subscription prices.
