(Press release)
MultiChoice, a subsidiary of CANAL+ SA—a global media and entertainment company—announced today, March 5, 2026, that it will soon discontinue its Showmax service, following a thorough review of its streaming activities.
This decision was taken by the Showmax Board of Directors and reflects MultiChoice's ongoing focus on financial discipline and investment optimization in an increasingly competitive global streaming environment. The substantial annual losses incurred by Showmax proved unsustainable. The decision to discontinue Showmax reflects the group's commitment to building a sustainable and competitive business for the long term in an increasingly demanding global streaming environment.
The decision to discontinue Showmax services will not result in any layoffs. The Group will offer various options to affected employees.
This development is also part of MultiChoice's ambition to roll out its own large-scale streaming platform, thereby meeting the expectations of its African and international consumers.
CANAL+ will continue to invest in premium content for MultiChoice subscribers and in technological innovation in order to consolidate its position as the leader in the African entertainment market.
Further information regarding the expansion of content offerings and platform enhancements will be communicated in due course. The Group would like to assure Showmax subscribers that its priority is to provide them with a superior streaming experience.
