Gideon Khobane appointed Director of AMAZON PRIME VIDEO: is sport the new playground for digital platforms?

Gideon Khobane has just been appointed Director of AMAZON PRIME VIDEO AFRICA. This South African professional was CEO of SuperSport, a subsidiary of MultiChoice, for several years.

At AMAZON PRIME VIDEO AFRICA, he will work closely with Ned Mitchell, who heads the Africa Originals team, and Ayanna Lonian, who heads content acquisitions.

While his main mission will be to offer "a catalog of original and exclusive TV series and films for current subscribers that will attract new customers in sub-Saharan Africa," it is clear that his experience as CEO of Supersport will be extremely useful in all matters relating to sports content.

For many years, broadcasts of major sporting events have been provided by the ten SUPERSPORT (MULTIVISION) channels in English-speaking sub-Saharan Africa and the six CANAL+ channels in French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa, with competition from New World TV during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Will sports become the new playground for platforms and new entrants in Africa? The arrival of Gideon Khobane on AMAZON PRIME VIDEO sheds new light on the question.

To be followed closely in the upcoming tenders for sports rights…
