GEOPOLL publishes report on CAN 2024

In the midst of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, GeoPoll has published its latest analysis report on this major African sporting competition. Although the report focuses on English-speaking Africa, GeoPoll highlights the impact of the tournament on fans in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and Tanzania, drawing lessons about the cultural, social, and economic fabric of these countries.  Although this report is limited to English-speaking Africa, it highlights the following data: 

  • Unsurprisingly, the CAN enjoys high visibility, with 93.8% of respondents in the target countries aware of the organization and running of this sporting competition. 
  • The report highlights a certain "eagerness" with 93% of respondents stating their intention to watch the competition. The data shows a high level of engagement, particularly among 26- to 35-year-olds, and highlights a gender gap in the audience.
  • In terms of media consumption and preferences, traditional television remains the dominant medium for watching matches, but a significant shift toward mobile platforms further highlights the changing media consumption landscape in Africa.
  • National teams enjoy strong support and are a source of genuine national pride. 
  • The 2024 Africa Cup of Nations generates significant economic activity, with nearly half of those surveyed purchasing merchandise in their team's colors and more than 60% engaging in sports betting.
  • The report highlights the cultural and social impact of the CAN, illustrating how soccer events are closely linked to the societal fabric of African countries.
