Today, during the annual Connect conference, Mark Zuckerberg shared his vision for the metaverse and how the company will be involved in building this future.
- The metaverse will be a virtual 3D social space where you can share immersive experiences with other people, even if you can't be together in person, and do things together that you couldn't do in the physical world.
"I'm proud of what we've built so far, and excited to see what the future holds. We're moving beyond what's possible today, such as screen constraints and the limitations of physics and distance. We are moving toward a future where everyone can be present with others, create new opportunities, and have new experiences. This future is not limited to a single company, and each of us is needed to make it happen." – Mark Zuckerberg
"Right now, our brand is so closely tied to a single product that it can't represent everything we do today, let alone in the future. Over time, I hope we will be seen as a metaverse company, and I want to anchor our work and identity in what we are striving for." – Mark Zuckerberg
In addition to our vision for the metaverse, we also shared our current progress on some of the foundational elements of our AR & VR technology development strategy.
- Announcements Virtual reality: Virtual reality is at an inflection point, driven by the release of Quest 2. Gaming is booming, VR is becoming more social, fitness is becoming a hot vertical, and we're developing new ways to use VR as a work tool. Finally, we continue to invest in the developer community to help them build and monetize their applications with new tools and features.
- Announcements Augmented reality: As augmented reality reaches an inflection point, we are investing in the core technology and work necessary to bring full-featured AR glasses to market. While we work on the hardware needed to build augmented reality glasses, we are cultivating the content, capabilities, and communities that can enrich today's Facebook experiences and light the path to tomorrow's augmented reality glasses.
To reflect this new chapter for the company, Facebook is officially changing its name to Meta.
- Our new company brand reflects the direction our society is taking and the future we want to help build.
- We chose "Meta" because it can mean "beyond," and it reflects our commitment to building social technologies that take us beyond what digital connection makes possible today.
- We are also introducing a new logo and color to accompany our new corporate brand. The logo is rendered in a gradient of blue, as a nod to our heritage. It was designed to be experienced in 3D, so it truly comes to life in the metaverse, where you can move through and around it.
