37,000 km long – that is the length of the submarine cable planned to connect the African continent to the Internet.
The vast 2Africa project was made official by a consortium of eight players responsible for constructing the cable. Stakeholders include web giant Facebook, Orange, South Africa's MTN, China Mobile International, and Alcatel Submarine Networks, which is in charge of construction.
This vast cable project is expected to be operational by 2023, with the aim of improving Internet access on the continent as well as in the Middle East, regions of the world where the digital divide remains very much present.
