The RFI editorial team in Mandinka and Fulfulde, based in Dakar, is launching its new editorial offering today, Monday, December 14, consisting of two hours of daily programming in each of these two major languages spoken in the Sahel: news programs covering regional, African, and international current events, and thematic magazines related to sustainable development issues.
RFI is launching its Fulfulde editorial offering with two hours of daily programming, four half-hour segments broadcast at 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. GMT. These segments complement the magazine program "Alors on dit quoi" (So what do we say?), which has been available in this language every Saturday and Sunday since April 2019.
At the same time, the volume of programs in Mandenkan has also been increased to two hours, doubling the daily offering, with four half-hour programs broadcast at 7 a.m., 8 a.m., 12 p.m., and 5 p.m. GMT.
These broadcast programs are also available digitally in both languages. They aim to promote freedom of expression, public debate, and dialogue between cultures, and to contribute to gender equality.
Programs in Fulfulde are available on FM in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Gambia, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Sierra Leone, Senegal, as well as in southern Mauritania and the Lake Chad region.
The editorial team's Mandenkan and Fulfulde broadcasts are also transmitted throughout the Sahel region on shortwave and via a large network of partner radio stations. The content is also accessible across the continent and the rest of the world thanks to digital services.
Mandenkan and Fulfulde are spoken by more than 80 million people worldwide.
The development of RFI's Mandenkan and Fulfulde editorial team is part of the "Afri'Kibaaru" project, implemented by France Médias Monde and CFI, and funded by the French Development Agency (AFD), to strengthen access to reliable and independent information in West and Central Africa. It aims to develop content in African languages broadcast on RFI and its partner radio stations, to strengthen the capacities of a large network of journalists and media outlets, and to stimulate local public debate on issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
