16% of the African population has a TIKTOK account, according to Africascope 2021/2022.

According to the latest AFRICASCOPE 2021/2022 results recently published by KANTAR on internet usage in the eight French-speaking sub-Saharan African countries studied, internet usage continues to grow. Regular internet users (at least once a week) now exceed 50% of the population (50.2% on average across the eight countries). They represent almost three-quarters of the Senegalese population (72.3%), while they are below 50% in the other countries studied, with the exception of Mali (54.6%) and Côte d'Ivoire (54.7%), which are above 50%.

The previous day's internet user indicator is even more revealing of internet penetration in the country (in this case, the capital of a country, given the data collection method used in the Africascope study) and shows Senegal's lead in terms of both the percentage of the population that used the internet the previous day (previous day's internet users) and DEI (duration of use per individual (DEI). As we already reported in 2021, WhatsApp surpasses Facebook in all countries except the DRC, where Facebook remains slightly ahead of WhatsApp.

Now, 69.9% of respondents have a WhatsApp account, compared to 65.2% who have a Facebook account.

Behind these two leaders, TikTok appears in the study for the first time: 16% of respondents have a TikTok account on average across the eight countries. This figure rises to 30.5% in Senegal and 28.2% in Côte d'Ivoire. Instagram retains its third place with an average of 26% across the eight countries.
