Annie Awards: Four nominations for the Afrofuturist animated series Kizazi Moto

Original African cartoon creations are gradually being exported beyond the continent. These authentic stories are set to grow and become increasingly well known.

This is particularly true of the Afrofuturist animated series Kizazi Moto, which was nominated in four categories at the Annie Awards on January 14:

  • Best Short Film Series
  • Best Special Effects for a Series
  • Best animated series character
  • Best Character Design for an Animated Series
  • Best Character Design for an Animated Series

As a reminder, the Annie Awards ceremony has been recognizing excellence in the animation industry since 1972. For the 2024 edition, Kizazi Moto has made a big splash with four nominations. The winners will be announced on February 17 in Los Angeles.

Produced by Disney and South African studio Triggerfish Animation, this series is the result of a collaboration with 14 African directors. Netflix is also active in this field, with the streaming platform releasing its first African animated series, Supa Team 4, in July. The series is set in a futuristic version of the Zambian capital, Lusaka, and tells the story of four teenage girls on a mission to save the world.

Proof that original African cartoon creations are on the rise and are gradually being exported beyond the continent.
