Africascope Sept 2023/June 2024 – Key findings on Internet usage

The results of the September 2023–June 2024 wave of the AFRICASCOPE study are now available to subscribers. In addition to TV and radio audience figures, they provide insights into Internet usage and social media use.

INTERNET

Internet usage continues to increase.

It rose from an average of less than 50% in the same period last year to 55% in 2023/2024.

Senegal remains by far the country with the highest Internet usage (79% of the Senegalese population used the Internet the previous day).

Mali, meanwhile, has seen a significant increase, rising from 58% to 71% in one year.

Other countries are stagnating (Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Congo) or experiencing sharp declines (Cameroon, Gabon, DRC).

It should be noted that last March, four of the five cables supplying these countries were damaged, causing particularly severe disruptions in Côte d'Ivoire, Benin, and Burkina Faso, and also affecting Cameroon and Gabon in Central Africa.

SOCIAL MEDIA

94% of internet users have a social media account.

WhatsApp is the most popular with 86%, followed by Facebook with 81% and TikTok with 52% (representing a 10-point increase in one year).

In Senegal, 80% of internet users have a TIK TOK account, while only 60% have a Facebook account.
