In April 2024, the authorities in Burkina Faso suspended the TV channel TV5Monde and access to its website, along with six other international media outlets: Deutsche Welle, Ouest-France, Le Monde, Apanews, The Guardian, and Agence Ecofin.
Now it's Voice of America's turn to be suspended for three months.
The decision announced on October 7 by the High Council for Communication (CSC) was justified by "the broadcasting of programs likely to undermine the morale of the Burkinabe and Malian armed forces in their fight against terrorism."
In particular, the September 19, 2024, broadcast of the program "Washington Forum," simulcast on the private Burkinabe radio station Ouaga FM, is being criticized.
The CSC claims to have identified "serious breaches," criticizing one presenter in particular for describing the attack of September 17, 2024, in Mali as "courageous."
The periods during which Burkinabe media outlets simultaneously broadcast the content of certain international media outlets are now prohibited.
